Canada’s Start-Up Visa Is Paused — Here’s What Entrepreneurs Should Do Now

If you’ve been considering Canada’s Start-Up Visa Program, there’s an important update: as of January 1, 2026, the program is paused to new applicants, and the final filing deadline for those who already held a valid 2025 commitment certificate — June 30, 2026 — has now passed.

Here’s what this actually means, and what options remain for entrepreneurs still interested in Canada:

The pause reflects a bigger shift in business immigration. Canada’s 2026–2028 Immigration Levels Plan cut federal business immigration admission targets by roughly 50%, from about 1,000 down to 500 principal applicants per year. The Self-Employed Persons Program was paused at the same time. IRCC has cited a backlog of more than 42,000 files and processing times exceeding 40 months as key reasons behind the reset.

A new, more selective entrepreneur pilot is expected, though details haven’t yet been published. IRCC has signalled this will feature lower intake caps and stricter eligibility requirements than the original SUV program — a shift toward fewer applicants with a stronger, clearer economic case.

Provincial entrepreneur streams remain a live option. Several provinces continue to run their own business and investor immigration streams independently of the federal program, with their own net worth thresholds, investment requirements, and residency commitments — worth exploring seriously while the federal pilot takes shape.

If you already hold an SUV work permit and a pending PR application, your file continues to be processed, and you can apply to extend your work permit while you wait — don’t let your current status lapse.

The federal pause doesn’t mean the door to business immigration is closed — it means the path has shifted. Book a free assessment and we’ll map out the provincial and federal options that fit your business and your timeline.
