What Is Family Sponsorship?
Family sponsorship β formally called the Family Class immigration program β allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor eligible family members for permanent residence in Canada. The sponsor takes legal and financial responsibility for the sponsored person for a set period of time.

Spouse, Common-Law Partner & Conjugal Partner Sponsorship
This is the most common sponsorship category. Canadian citizens and PRs can sponsor their spouse (legally married), common-law partner (lived together for at least 12 months), or conjugal partner (in a committed relationship for at least one year but unable to live together or marry due to exceptional circumstances). Sponsored spouses and partners often qualify for a temporary open work permit while their PR application is being processed.
Dependent Children
Canadian citizens and PRs can sponsor their dependent children β biological or adopted. A dependent child is generally under 22 years of age, or 22 or older if they have depended mainly on a parent for financial support since before age 22 due to a physical or mental condition.
Parents & Grandparents
Canadian citizens and PRs can sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residence. The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is competitive β applications are accepted through an annual intake process with limited spots. There’s also the Super Visa option for parents and grandparents who want to visit for extended periods without applying for permanent residence.
Other Eligible Relatives: In limited cases, Canadian citizens with no close relatives in Canada and no family members eligible under the standard categories may be able to sponsor one relative of any age or relationship.
Who Can Sponsor a Family Member?
To be eligible as a sponsor, you must meet several requirements set by the federal government:

- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person registered under the Canadian Indian Act
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Live in Canada (with some exceptions for citizens living abroad)
- Meet the financial requirements for the category you’re sponsoring
- Not be in default on a previous sponsorship agreement
- Not have certain criminal convictions
- Not be receiving social assistance, except for disability
- Not be bankrupt
For parents and grandparents specifically, you must also meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) threshold β based on your family size β for the three tax years before your application.
Family Sponsorship Pathways β What’s Available
Each sponsorship category has its own process, timeline, and requirements. Choosing the right pathway β and the right route within it β can make a real difference in processing time.
Spousal Sponsorship β Inland vs. Outland
Spousal sponsorship can be processed through two routes:
- Inland Sponsorship β Your spouse is already in Canada (as a visitor, student, or worker) and you apply together from within Canada. Inland applicants may qualify for an open work permit while waiting.
- Outland Sponsorship β Your spouse applies from their home country or country of residence. Processing happens at the relevant visa office, and can sometimes be faster depending on the country.

Super Visa β For Parents & Grandparents
The Super Visa is a multi-entry visa allowing parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and PRs to visit Canada for up to 5 years at a time, with total visa validity of up to 10 years. It’s not permanent residence β but it’s an excellent option for families who want extended time together while a PR application is processed or considered.
Requirements include: a letter of invitation from the child or grandchild in Canada, proof of Canadian health insurance for at least one year, proof that the sponsor meets the LICO threshold, and standard admissibility requirements.
Adoption
Canadian citizens can sponsor children adopted internationally. The process involves both provincial/territorial approval and federal processing. International adoption immigration is one of the most complex sponsorship categories β we advise on the full process, including Hague Convention considerations where applicable.

For parents and grandparents, the Super Visa allows extended visits to Canada while a PR sponsorship is being pursued or considered. 3. Humanitarian & Compassionate Grounds
In cases where standard sponsorship doesn’t apply β unusual family situations, de facto family members, or compelling humanitarian circumstances β H&C applications can provide a pathway to PR.
