Spousal Sponsorship in 2026: Updated Processing Times and What They Mean for Your Timeline

If you’re planning a spousal sponsorship application, the current numbers matter for how you plan the next chapter of your life together. As of mid-2026, IRCC’s published processing times are approximately 16 months for Outland applications and 25 months for Inland applications, for cases processed outside Quebec.

Here’s what’s behind these numbers, and what you can actually control:

Outland remains the faster option — by about 9 months. Outland sponsorship (where your spouse applies from outside Canada) also preserves full appeal rights if the application is refused, something worth weighing carefully against the convenience of applying while already living together in Canada.

These timelines only start once your application is complete. IRCC’s clock begins when a complete application is received — not when you submit it. An incomplete application isn’t simply delayed; it can be returned entirely, resetting your timeline back to zero. This is one of the most common and most avoidable causes of extended waits.

2026 brought a meaningful intake increase. Canada’s Immigration Levels Plan allocates 84,000 admission spots this year for spouses, partners, and children — before that number decreases to 81,000 in 2027 and 2028. Applicants filing in 2026 may benefit from a comparatively more favourable intake window than what’s coming next.

Quebec-destined applications face a separate, longer timeline due to a provincial pause on new sponsorship undertakings that remained in effect through much of 2026 — worth factoring in early if Quebec is your intended destination.

Getting your documentation right from the outset — relationship evidence, financial requirements, complete forms — is still the single biggest factor within your control. Book your free assessment and we’ll help you build a file that avoids the delays we see most often.
