Family Sponsorship

Family Sponsorship

Every month your family spends apart is a month too long. Canada believes families belong together β€” and the family sponsorship program exists to make that happen. But the process is demanding, and a single error can delay reunion by a year or more.

Bibi R Maudhoo has reunited families from over 50 countries β€” spouses, children, parents, and grandparents. Every sponsorship package we prepare is complete, accurate, and built to handle close review from immigration officers.

A quick warning before you read further: only a licensed RCIC is legally allowed to give immigration advice for a fee in Canada. Unlicensed consultants take fees and file incomplete applications, then disappear when things go wrong β€” leaving families separated even longer. Bibi R Maudhoo is based in Brampton, Ontario, licensed under CICC (#R415359), and personally accountable for every file.

Bibi R Maudhoo handles spousal sponsorship, parent and grandparent sponsorship, dependent children, and the Super Visa β€” managing every detail so your family’s case is presented in the strongest possible way.

Relationship evidence, financial documents, admissibility checks β€” sponsorship applications involve many moving parts. Bibi R Maudhoo reviews every document personally before anything is submitted, so nothing gets missed.

What Is Family Sponsorship?

Family sponsorship β€” formally called the Family Class immigration program β€” allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor eligible family members for permanent residence in Canada. The sponsor takes legal and financial responsibility for the sponsored person for a set period of time.

Reuniting Families, One Application at a Time

Family sponsorship covers spouses, common-law partners, dependent children, parents, and grandparents. Each category has its own rules β€” and its own risk of delay if anything is missing or unclear.

Spouse, Common-Law Partner & Conjugal Partner Sponsorship

This is the most common sponsorship category. Canadian citizens and PRs can sponsor their spouse (legally married), common-law partner (lived together for at least 12 months), or conjugal partner (in a committed relationship for at least one year but unable to live together or marry due to exceptional circumstances). Sponsored spouses and partners often qualify for a temporary open work permit while their PR application is being processed.

Dependent Children

Canadian citizens and PRs can sponsor their dependent children β€” biological or adopted. A dependent child is generally under 22 years of age, or 22 or older if they have depended mainly on a parent for financial support since before age 22 due to a physical or mental condition.

Parents & Grandparents

Canadian citizens and PRs can sponsor their parents and grandparents for permanent residence. The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is competitive β€” applications are accepted through an annual intake process with limited spots. There’s also the Super Visa option for parents and grandparents who want to visit for extended periods without applying for permanent residence.

Other Eligible Relatives: In limited cases, Canadian citizens with no close relatives in Canada and no family members eligible under the standard categories may be able to sponsor one relative of any age or relationship.

Who Can Sponsor a Family Member?

To be eligible as a sponsor, you must meet several requirements set by the federal government:

βœ… Sponsor eligibility requirements:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a person registered under the Canadian Indian Act
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Live in Canada (with some exceptions for citizens living abroad)
  • Meet the financial requirements for the category you’re sponsoring
  • Not be in default on a previous sponsorship agreement
  • Not have certain criminal convictions
  • Not be receiving social assistance, except for disability
  • Not be bankrupt

For parents and grandparents specifically, you must also meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) threshold β€” based on your family size β€” for the three tax years before your application.

Family Sponsorship Pathways β€” What’s Available

Each sponsorship category has its own process, timeline, and requirements. Choosing the right pathway β€” and the right route within it β€” can make a real difference in processing time.

Spousal Sponsorship β€” Inland vs. Outland

Spousal sponsorship can be processed through two routes:

  • Inland Sponsorship β€” Your spouse is already in Canada (as a visitor, student, or worker) and you apply together from within Canada. Inland applicants may qualify for an open work permit while waiting.
  • Outland Sponsorship β€” Your spouse applies from their home country or country of residence. Processing happens at the relevant visa office, and can sometimes be faster depending on the country.

We assess which route is faster and more suitable for your situation.

Super Visa β€” For Parents & Grandparents

The Super Visa is a multi-entry visa allowing parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and PRs to visit Canada for up to 5 years at a time, with total visa validity of up to 10 years. It’s not permanent residence β€” but it’s an excellent option for families who want extended time together while a PR application is processed or considered.

Requirements include: a letter of invitation from the child or grandchild in Canada, proof of Canadian health insurance for at least one year, proof that the sponsor meets the LICO threshold, and standard admissibility requirements.

Adoption

Canadian citizens can sponsor children adopted internationally. The process involves both provincial/territorial approval and federal processing. International adoption immigration is one of the most complex sponsorship categories β€” we advise on the full process, including Hague Convention considerations where applicable.

Hidden Opportunities in Family Sponsorship

Most applicants don’t know these options exist. We find them in your free assessment β€” no cost, no obligation.

1. Temporary Open Work Permit During Processing

Many sponsored spouses and partners are eligible for an open work permit while their PR application is in process β€” allowing them to work for any Canadian employer without waiting for PR confirmation. This is not automatic β€” it must be applied for correctly. We include this in every spousal sponsorship package.

Visitor Visa RCIC Canada

2. Super Visa While PR Is Processing

For parents and grandparents, the Super Visa allows extended visits to Canada while a PR sponsorship is being pursued or considered. Families don’t have to wait years without seeing each other β€” the Super Visa bridges the gap.

Up to 5 years per visit, 10 years total validity β€” the Super Visa is one of the most underused options for keeping families connected while a sponsorship application moves forward.

3. Humanitarian & Compassionate Grounds

In cases where standard sponsorship doesn’t apply β€” unusual family situations, de facto family members, or compelling humanitarian circumstances β€” H&C applications can provide a pathway to PR. These are complex and need careful preparation. We advise on eligibility and strategy.

4. Sponsorship After a Previous Refusal

A previous sponsorship refusal doesn’t permanently stop a new application. Understanding exactly why the previous application was refused β€” and building a strong response to those concerns β€” can lead to a successful reapplication. We review previous refusal letters as part of our assessment.

Hidden opportunities are only hidden if you don’t know where to look. We check every available option in your free assessment β€” work permits, Super Visa, and reapplication strategy.

Family Sponsorship Mistakes That Delay Reunions

These are the mistakes we see most often β€” and the ones most easily avoided with the right guidance.

❌ Mistake 1 β€” Incomplete Relationship Evidence

Immigration officers look closely at whether a relationship is genuine β€” especially for spousal and partner sponsorships. Applications without enough evidence of a real relationship get refused. Evidence needs to cover the full timeline β€” from how you met to your current situation. We provide a detailed evidence guide built around your specific relationship history.

❌ Mistake 2 β€” Missing or Expired Documents

Family sponsorship packages require many documents β€” birth certificates, marriage certificates, police certificates, medical exams, photos, and more. Each document has specific rules for format, translation, and how long it stays valid. One missing or expired document can cause your application to be returned or refused.

❌ Mistake 3 β€” Incorrect Financial Documentation

For parent and grandparent sponsorship, failing to meet the MNI threshold or providing incorrect tax documents leads to refusal. We check your financial eligibility before anything is submitted.

❌ Mistake 4 β€” Not Addressing Admissibility Issues

Criminal history, medical conditions, previous immigration violations, and false statements can all make a sponsored person inadmissible to Canada. These issues need to be identified and addressed before the application is filed β€” not discovered after submission. We check admissibility as part of every sponsorship review.

Choosing the wrong route β€” inland vs. outland for spouses, PR vs. Super Visa for parents β€” can add months or years to the process. We assess which pathway is fastest and most suitable for your situation.

❌ Mistake 5 β€” Choosing the Wrong Processing Route

The right route depends on your family’s specific circumstances β€” where your spouse currently lives, your timeline, and your personal situation. We help you choose correctly the first time.

The Most Costly Mistake β€” Using an Unlicensed Consultant

Unlicensed consultants often target families desperate to reunite. They file incomplete applications, give wrong advice on relationship evidence, and disappear when refusals arrive. A sponsorship refusal can trigger flags that affect future applications.

Always check your consultant at canada.ca/rcic before paying any fees. Bibi R Maudhoo is RCIC #R415359 β€” licensed, regulated, and accountable under Canadian law.

Frequently Asked Questions β€” Family Sponsorhip

Who can I sponsor to come to Canada?
You can sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner, your dependent children (including adopted children), your parents and grandparents, and in some cases other eligible relatives if you have no close family in Canada.
Do I need to be a Canadian citizen to sponsor someone?
No. Permanent residents can also sponsor eligible family members. However, citizens have access to a wider range of sponsorship options, including sponsoring parents and grandparents.
What are the income requirements for sponsorship?
For spousal and dependent child sponsorship, there is generally no minimum income requirement. For parents and grandparents, you must meet a minimum necessary income threshold for the three years before you apply.
How long does family sponsorship take?
Processing times vary. Spousal sponsorship typically takes 10–12 months. Parents and grandparents can take significantly longer depending on the intake year and application volumes.
What is an undertaking and how long does it last?
An undertaking is a legal promise to financially support the person you sponsor. For a spouse or partner it lasts 3 years. For parents and grandparents sponsored after October 2014, it is 20 years.
What documents do I need to prove my relationship?
IRCC requires strong evidence that your relationship is genuine. This includes photos together, communication records, financial ties, and statutory declarations from people who know you both. The stronger your evidence package, the smoother your application.
What happens if my sponsorship application is refused?
You have the right to appeal a refusal to the Immigration Appeal Division (IAD). Appeals can be complex and time-sensitive β€” working with a licensed RCIC from the start reduces the risk of refusal significantly.
Can I sponsor someone if I previously received social assistance?
In most cases, receiving social assistance (other than for a disability) will make you ineligible to sponsor. There are exceptions, and eligibility depends on your specific situation.
